Right lads, below is the write-up I took and translated (using Google Chrome) to English. I got it from IMOC. The guy is German and he's detailed every step of his rebuild and included pictures! Be warned, it's a long read and there's LOTS of pictures! Thought some on here might find it useful or use it as motivation (me) to get their engine done.

Construction of a 3S-GTE GEN III Turbo engine

Description

The 3S-GTE engine is it is a 2.0-liter four - cylinder - cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16-valve.

Functioning

The 3S-GTE engine is it is a DOHC in-line engine with four cylinders, which are numbered from front to back with 1-2-3-4. The crankshaft is mounted in the crankcase five times. The cups are made of an aluminum alloy.

The crankshaft has eight counterweights. In the center of the crankshaft are drilling for oil to connecting rods to lubricate bearings, pistons and other parts.

The firing order is 1-3-4-2. The cross-flow cylinder head is also made of an aluminum alloy, the spark plugs are located in the middle of the roof-shaped combustion chambers.

The intake manifold is provided with 4 separate long inlet channels and utilizes the mass-charge effect to improve the motor torque in the low and medium engine speed range.

Intake and exhaust camshafts are driven by a single belt, the five camshaft bearings are arranged between the valve stem groups of the cylinder and cylinder head at the front end. The lubrication of the bearing journal and the cam via the oil hole in the center of the camshaft.

The adjustment of valve clearance is done by means of shims that are used in the tappets. For setting the camshaft must be removed.

The pistons are made of a high-strength aluminum alloy, in the piston head are wells that are to prevent the valves hitting the piston crown.

The floating piston pins are fully supported, ie, the bolts are not in the piston connecting rod still in a press fit, but are held by retaining rings on both ends in position.

The compression ring No. 1 and the oil scraper ring made of stainless steel, for the compression ring 2 cast iron was used. Since the outer diameter of the piston rings is slightly larger than the piston diameter, the elastic rings press when mounted against the cylinder walls. 3. Step

Installation of the oil nozzle

4. Step

Check the oil cooler

Oil pressure regulator

At high engine speeds exceeds the amount of oil supplied to the capacity of the engine. For this reason, a pressure regulator is included to prevent over-supply. With normal use, a coil spring and a valve to bypass oil channel closed. However, if too much oil is supplied, the pressure rises sharply, overcomes the spring force and opens the bypass valve. This allows the excess oil pass through the valve and flow directly to the oil pan.

If it is stuck, replace the pressure relief valve.

- Apply thread and the area under the head of the relief valve with thin engine oil
- Mount the oil cooler with a new gasket, washer and overpressure valve.

Torque: 78 Nm

5. Step

Install main bearing shells

Note:

The main bearings are dealing with a width of 19.2 mm and 23.0 mm. The 23.0 mm wide bearings are used in storage unit No. 3 of the cylinder block and bearing cap No. 3. The 19.2 mm wide bearing shells are used for the other camp.

The upper bearings have oil grooves and oil drilling, not lower.

5. Pass - All bolts to 60 Nm


Torque: 59 Nm

When using ARP bolts for example:

Threads of the bolt assembly coat it with paste and turn into the engine block. The five storage lid on the pan. Supplied washer and nut.

Torque: 81 Nm

Assembly of piston and Pleulstangen

- Install a new retaining ring on one side of the piston pin hole.

Note: Make sure that the collateral impact is not due to the Kolbenbolzenkehlung of the piston.

Water inlet and thermostat installed:

Thermostat

The thermostat is equipped with a thermal wax-bypass valve and the water inlet housing. This valve is controlled by the thermostat as a function of coolant temperature. When the temperature drops to a certain value, the valve closes, allowing the coolant circuit is interrupted by the motor and the engine warms up faster. Above a certain temperature, then opens the valve so that the coolant can pass through the engine. The thermal wax in the thermostat expands when heated and accuses together on cooling. The generated by the heat expanding wax, a force that overcomes the opposing force of the valve spring and thus opens the valve. Dichtung auflegen und Dichtungsring auf den Wasser-Bypass geben, diesen mit Spülmittel bestreichen.

Montage der TOP FEED Wolfkatz Fuel Rail inc. 1000 er Delphi Benzindüsen

Ausgangsposition:

1. Die Delphi Benzindüsen mit O-Ring Fett bestreichen und in die Benzinleiste drücken.

2. Montagebügel an der Benzinleiste befestigen, dabei die Schrauben mit blauem Loctite einschrauben.

3. Die orig. Abstandshalter mit der Drehmaschine abdrehen. Somit habt ihr eine Beilagscheibe, welche euch beim Montieren nicht verrutschen kann. Auch der passende Abstand kann so hergestellt werden. WICHTIG - ohne diesen Abstand sitzt die Benzinleiste nicht senkrecht und es können Undichtigkeiten am Sitz der Benzindüse entstehen!

Hier im Bild seht ihr diese abgedrehten Abstandshalter:

Der Abgaskrümmer mit Hitzeschutzlack lackiert:

Und ja, es ist der orig. Abgaskrümmer.... Viele werden sich jetzt fragen - warum verbaut er keinen aus Edelstahl etc.....

-> ganz einfach.... ich habe einfach keinen Bock das mir der Edelstahlschrott zehnmal reißt, sich verkrümmt usw... deswegen wurde der alte durchgeglühte Krümmer geplant und mit Hoeseler Hitzeschutzfarbe lackiert... ob die Farbe hier hält ist eher zweitrangig... kommt ja eh eine Abdeckung drüber...
