Changes in the budget today mean that we will be paying over 700 euro a year on tax for our MR2's.

I use my MR2 as my daily driver and it's getting tougher and tougher every year. Petrol consumption isn't too bad, it's the price of fuel that's the killer. Insurance is bearable, but this increase in tax (not to mention VAT) is going to make it even harder for all of us

just out of curiosity, does anyone else here use the MR2 as a daily driver?

Same as myself. Don't smoke or drink (much) so MR2 takes the place of both. On the plus side I suppose they are only going to become even more rare on the roads, even in the last year I've seen less around than before.

Mine's my daily driver as well, if the petrol prices go any higher I think I'll just take off the turbo and throw a fiver out the window every time I put the shoe down, probably be cheaper

Was tempted to start similar thread but way I look at is it's my daily driver and fair enough
it's a hefty lump for tax but I've zero depreciation on the car and that's how I'll justify it

It's getting beyond a joke though

...anyways how about this morning frost?? Sideways to heaven!

Its crazy the cost of motoring in this country tbh they cant stand by putting petrol costs any higher or the country will grind to a halt.
Its well and good for other countrys that actually have a 'public transport'system,we dont.

I love driving. The thoughts of bring stuck in some ecobox just kill me.

Since making the switch from bikes to cars I have really felt the difference on daily running costs.

Tax on a 1 litre 180bhp sportbike-€76. Monthly fuel costs €50-€75.

Tax on a Mr2 over €700. Monthly fules costs- over €200.

It hurts, but il do all I can to keep hold of it!

Mine is my daily driver too and im also struggling with the cost of petrol. Luckly i live about 20 mins walk from where i work so i have been walking in during the week lately but with this weather at the moment i would much prefer to be cozy in my Mr2! Im running Dipetane at the moment as well because i recently had my NCT and it does help fuel economy a little bit but nothing to get excited about! it might save you a tenner a month! I an in total agreement, it is getting more difficult to keep my two running as a daily driver ! Because of this im currently looking to get a Ninja 250r to use for any small commutes once the weather permits

This increase in road tax is just crazy. All it is going to do is put more people off the road. Then you fill up the form and go in and get it stamped. Government still gets the same amount. As they say you can't take knickers off a bare arse.....

Anyway what is the time frame to get aclassic tax? Is it 20 years or more?

My deuce is my hobby, so its a killer to tax. I now only tax for 6 months but that may have to come down to 3 months. Double whammy fo the government as I don't buy petrol when I am off so they lose twice.

I'd prefer to see tax rolled into the petrol price that way you only pay as you go and thus pay as you polute. I'm sure that would keep the greens happy. It would also save all the admin such as the garda checkpoints, tax office admin, etc, etc......

Just my deuce cents on the matter.....

Classic tax is 30 years. All cars, classic or otherwise newer than Jan 1 1980 must NCT yearly as well, before this date no NCT required. Classic in the UK is pre 1973, so there may be a little gap in the market for decently large-engined and fun cars that are not UK classics but which would be non-NCT Irish classics.

My MR2 is not a daily driver, I've an Audi estate for that. I can't carry mountain bikes or kayaks with the 2...

This is where the problem lies...I use mine everyday more or les so dont mind paying what I pay...but for the likes of you who wants a weekend car, its completely unfair...

anyway feck them I thought they'd crucify the 535d brigade on 200 a year...I could get myself a nice new post 2008 car in the morning if i wanted, but prefer to mr2 it.

To greg 1973 Well at least its only an alloy damage, might been even worse, look at my donor for sale in buy/swap thread to see what i mean .Depending where you are based there are plenty of shops that do alloys these days in meath area, depending on the damage you might be looking at 40 to 160e to get it sorted,a bit off topic hope it helps.
