Power Steering Ratio (sudden change) 1 Year, 2 Months ago Karma: 2
Hey everyone,

4 months I bought myself (from my brother) a Japan Imported 1998 Beams MR2
Until yesterday, the only money I had spent on the car was petrol, that's how well it was kept by my brother.

Yesterday night, as I was making a turn I felt the steering wheel much lighter, I also noticed that the steering ratio had dramatically changed.

I am unable to tell what was the Steering Ratio, but now it is around 3.5 turns (1 turn = 360 degrees) from lock to lock. If I had to guess what was the original Steering Ratio, I would say that it was between 2 to 2.5 turns, very sharp indeed.

The car feels very unsafe as it is.

Any idea what could be the issue here?

Check your power steering fluid.
Its impossible for the ratio to change or for the teeth to slip on the steering rack.
Short out t1 and e1 in engine bay diagnostics plug to check for powersteering fault codes.

I think it is around 3.5 or 3.2 turns lock to lock

Thanks everyone.
I took the car to the mechanic and was told that nothing is wrong with the car.

Im still not conviced of that.
Just as a sanity test, I checked a friends car today (not an MR2) and his lock to lock was only 2.5:1

That could be the wheel alignment, if the wheels got a rub of a kerb or went out any other way it can impact the feel of the steering.

How are the tyres for thread, was the road wet when this change in the feel happened.
