Dreaded tinworm, failed NCT.. 1 Year ago Karma: 11
It's been an interesting few weeks recently with cars!

The turbo and headgasket in my Audi estate gave up after 350 thousand kms, so I decided I'd get the MR2 back on the road pending the replacement of the Audi daily driver. The red paintwork was quite faded as is normal for the non-metallic Toyota paints of the era. I spent a full evening with a borrowed DA polisher and a Meguiars Paint Renovation kit and it brought the paint back to a good enough state. Not perfect, but no longer a matte white-pink at least! So, 3 months of tax was then purchased, and I tried to transfer the Audi insurance over to the Toyota. My insurer wouldn't do that without a valid NCT on the car.

I dropped the MR2 in to the test centre on Saturday morning just past, and the tester took just under an hour going through the car with a fine tooth comb. The car had enough failure points in the NCT that they had to give me a second sheet to print them all. I knew that the brake caliper pins needed doing do I was expecting that. I was not expecting however, the amount of holes the tester was able to poke into the sills, boot floor, and engine supports. Add to that some rubber gaiters with splits and a sticky door lock, and it's looking cost-prohibitive at this point to repair and weld 8 marked rust points. At least the engine passed with flying colours!

My plan for the MR2 at the moment, is to put it off the road again (after paying 3 months tax :/) and store it until it's eligible for classic tax. Then I'm hoping to fully repair it and maybe put a V6 into it.. I don't think it's really worth scrapping just yet, and I definitely do not have space to break it for parts.

I've got two cars outside my house, neither of which are usable and it's a little frustrating. The joys of motoring!

just a thought,if your planning on storing mr2 thats already got rust, the time your car is eligible for classic tax there might be no metal left, would you not repair the rust now before it gets worst.

Yes, I should really bite the bullet and fix it up. It'll just cost me a little bit to do, when I'm already going to have to pay for a replacement daily driver. Might be over the next few months instead.

Good to know about the sills, thank you for the pointer.

That's the place I got my replacement sills from. I hope to weld them this summer, weather permitting.
