a few problems for you wizzards to solve 6 Years, 10 Months ago Karma: 9
ok just got my MR2 last week and i have a few problems to throw out there to see can i find any solutions, its a 95 gt-s, import, (1) the dash lights are so dim that at night you cant actually see what speed your doin, and no dial fitted to adjust??? (2) central lockin, when you flick the button, it locks the drivers door, but not the passengers, when you lock the drivers door with the actuall key again its just the drivers door that locks, then if you lock the passengers door with the actuall key, it locks both doors??? any idea why or what would be causing the doors to not lock???

The central door locking problems sound like bad wiring which happens to these car as they get older.

Central locking - this might be worth checking

Source - www.mr2dc.com/forums_archive/mbMessage_15547.html

SystemAccountRegion:Central South I have got a problem with my central locking; when un-locking the car it will always unlock the passenger door, but occasionally it will not lock the passenger door when used in the drivers door; I guess that this is due to the switch in the door, can anyone confirm this/give me an idea of cost to replace or suggest any other action that could be required?!

SystemAccountRegion:Central South Matthew, I had this problem last week, remove the door panel from the drivers side and attached to the back of the lock is the central locking switch. this is a white plastic cap with wires coming off it. carefully prise this off and disconnect the wires. this is almost certainly the item at fault and you could either replace this with a new one or if you have minimum soldering skills you could:- remove the top and you will see a sliding contact that moves through 180 degrees over solder to either lock or unlock th car. you will probably find that it is all furred up. try cleaning it first but if the solder washes away you will have to add a blob of solder to extend the contact. (this quoted with thanks to Lee Hopwood) This cured the fault on my car, HTH Gregg 04/04/2002 11:12:09

SystemAccountRegion:Central South It can also be the drivers door lock switch on the inside - i have had this problem twice. Open the drivers door with the remote if you have one, if not, use the key. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to position two without starting the car, then press the door lock on the drivers door panel and watch what happens with the inner lock. Do this once or twice and when the pasenger door is unlocked, turn the ignition off, close the car and lock it with remote or key. Then try and open it again. Each time this has happened to me, this cures it and I put it down to a sticking relay. 03/04/2002 22:12:35

SystemAccountRegion:Central South I had a similar problem with the car locking the driver side but not the passenger side.(the alarrm wouldnt come on)It was a cable from the lock on the drivers side not sending the signal to the passenger door. Apparently it can be cleaned at the back of the lock but the new sender unit was only £15+vat. Easy to replace, take off the door trim and remove from back of lock barrel and plug new connector into socket where the old one come from. Takes about 15mins. 4 srcews to remove trim. 03/04/2002 18:12:27

Ok just a little update since gettin my lillte lady about 6 weeks ago,

I have striped out the clocks and changed the bulbs, now there fantastic and evan changed them to blue so looks evan nicer.

Now as for the door lock, I took that out, opened it all up and there is a motor inside it that has totally siezed up, i managed to free it a little after a day of soakin it in wd40, but its still very stiff and not workin properly so think ill be keepin an eye out for one of these over the next few months.

Just another few bits I have put right since gettin her, the windscreen washer pump, replaced at a cost of 11 euro off ebay, a steal at that price and a handy fix too aprox 15 min in total, horn replaced, @11euro for standard one from motor factors, another 10/15min id say again nothin to hard to figure, drivers side brake calliper was stickin like a bitch so took care of that too lots of time and more wd40 involved, it was funny only one of the pistons was stuck but by god was it stuck.

Oh and also a wide band expander for the jap radio to help with tuning stations, although its helped im still not happy with it, you kinda have to keep tuning in the station every now and again as its like it looses reception or something.

anyways ill keep you guys updated on the lockin system as I know ozzy you have the same problem and ill let you know if i get mine sorted

You have a broken wire between the door and the body of the car (most likely on the drivers side)
the wire have split with age you need to solder a short pice of wire in to it or the wire will be to short when you open the door.
I have had to do this on both my mr2's.
ps The wiring block will unplug on the body side beside the fuse box at the drivers feet.
