Beams MR2 Track Car. 5 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 327
So I sold my V6 Mrk I MR2 and bought another car, a 1998, white, beams after it received damaged to the front and underside via a ladder on a dark night. Amazing what you can pick up on a dark motorway these days.

Here is the new project car, purchased from Yamaha a member on MR2.ie, as she was prior to the ladder.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Now she is in my garage with the front being stripped off.

Interesting bits and pieces on this one;

Front cusco brace.
Rear Gab brace.
Unknown underbody brace, rusted to sh1t.
Whiteline arb’s front and rear.
Front coilovers, need to figure out what brand.
Back end of the car will get a good look at soon.
As I dig into her I may find more, but she will make an ample trackcar, and perhaps I will make her road legal as well for the crack.
I am trying to think of a name for her but that will come when I have skinned my knuckles a few times. Was thinking along the lines of Dita.

Needs doing.

Strip down front end and replace radiator
Weld in new rad support bar after it got destroyed.
Install new (2nd hand bumper)
Strip down and rebuild brake callipers.
New brake discs.
Remove alarm system.
Tidy up some cabling and brackets in the engine bay.
Lighten her up as much as possible.

So bumper is off, anybody want to repair and or buy an original Tom’s front bumper.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Updates to follow, need to book a track day to keep the pressure on, going out to the garage now for a couple more hours.

Cool thread Slip! I was just looking at the top pic and thought 'hey that looks like a Tom's bumper!' low and behold it is one. What a shame that it got damaged like that

Good news is that because it's fibreglass probably it can be fixed. Needs to be done by a pro though and then it would turn out like brand new. Problem is you need the pro.

If you want a replacement Tom's bumper let me know

KC for the great thread though, must try and make it over to you to check this beast out!!

Are you going for cage and stripped interior?

Thanks guys, I am thinking street legal, stripped out, seam welded & caged track car at the minute.

I had pondered your kit for a long time Quandry, but I don't think the car is right enough for putting a kit on. Perhaps later, I have front bumper / radiator etc to get from Anto hopefully this week.

More progress.

When I started today.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

When I finished before dinner, won't be getting any jobs in a breakers yard yet.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

The damaged bits that need replacing.

Front cross member to hold up the radiator.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Need part number 57014-17030

Front control arm mount got a slap as well.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Why it needs to be a track car and not a road car, I know a bit of rust routing out and a good paint job will have he back to full spec, but I can do that later if needs be.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Previous crash damage.

She got a fair smack alright, this member is held in with three spot welds on both sides of the chassis. It is not a structural member and only needs to hold the weight of the rad / ac condenser.

Just need to get the part, weld it in and bolt it all together to drive it again, so Dshamrock, you have shotgun.

I think for this year I will just get it out on track as light as reasonable. Then next winter start looking at advancing things further with the seam welding / cage and proper suspension build.

Thanks for the comments guys, anybody got a radiator, does not need to be perfect, not leaking would be better than the last one.

PS I know thats the AC condensor at the front but it gives you an idea of the damage to the rad behind, even the fans wont turn as the guards have a fair bit of damage.

Nice thread Slip!
So jealous that you will have yourself a track dedicated 2, I'd love to have a 2 just to track.
That ladder really messed up the front of the car, looks like you've got things under control though!
Such a shame about the Toms front, I wonder would someone like Peggy on the site be able to turn his hand to repairing it since he's pretty handy with the old fibre glass and filler?

Thanks Infamous, don't be jealous, I had to sell the V6 to get this and that got me a bit down. Also I may look to rent it out for trackdays to establihed members on this site only, but need to think about that one some more.

I was thinking of getting the Tom's repaired and will sell on if I do get it done.

Would be interesting to know what the weight difference is between a Tom's bumper and a standard Mk2 bumper. Tom's is designed to be lightweight racing products.

Get a price for the repair and give me the air intakes you take off as part of the deal and we can talk. If you want me to get more pictures of the damage I will. PM me your email address.

This is a bit of banter, Smurfster has first refusal on these even before I got the car out of Wicklow.

I will be getting another bumper Mon / Tuesday next week and can weigh it, but no point in using my Tom's as it has been lightened more

I'd definitely be interested in that Slip, you could even ride shotgun to make sure I wasn't gonna kill your 2 as well as offering some advice/pointers on the track! lol
Really looking to do a track day some time in the near future and would love it to be in a 2 but realistically I won't be able to do it in my current 2 since its my daily driver.

Re: Beams MR2 Track & Road car. 5 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 327
It would be a good way for people to learn more on their cars without risking them.

Don't know about me in the passenger seat, but I can point you around the track until you are used to the shape of it. Dshamrock might say different, I don't think I am quick at all on the track. It would be best then to get one of the training type dudes to go around and show you the fast way to do it.

Just need to think on the insurance end of things, don't want any family suing me because their father / mother / son / daughter drove the car into a fence / armco etc and tried to kill us both or leaving us injured.

Then there is the whole "you break it, you own it" thing that works so well in the biking world, people in the car world generally don't think like that. Basically you write off the track car I am owed an (MR2) track car.

Sounds harsh I know, but I think that is the way it generally works on most track-day car rentals.

Anyway I need to get the car finished first, still waiting for my radiator support bar then off to the body shop to spot weld it in. Put it all together then and give it a good run to make sure its working OK after I have put it together. Will strip it down piece by piece then once it running properly to reduce the weight.

If you go to a Trackskills event at Kirkiston, before they let you out on the track a qualified instructor takes you around the circuit in one of their cars. They show you the correct lines for each corner, approximate braking points, what to avoid avoid doing when out.

Its a great system, it means you dont get caught behind someone feeling their way around the track so it makes everyones day better, and keeps things a little safer.

Their days are run perfectly, they dont expect newbies to be Jenson Button, so put cars and drivers of equal capabilities out together in their first 2 sessions, then its open pit lane after that. £105 for the day, we burnt £90 of fuel last time we were down so plenty of track time available!

Nice bit of info weeJohn, thanks for that. I know the circuit, crashed there three times in the racing sidecar twice on debtors Would love to get out there again its alot faster than Mondello and having a man in the know in the passo seat would be even better.

Must be jet fuel your using, then again the back straight would fairly eat the fuel. When are you heading for a trackday again. Need to book a day to keep me on my toes and get this car done.

Edit: Just found this photo, not sure what part of the track it caame from.

With regards the whole trackday car, I've commited to buy another Mk1, just have to collect it, it runs but thats all i know about it , i was originally going to use it as a donor for the locks and dash on my car but ive sourced all the parts already, but i'll probably consider using it as a trackday car if its in decent enough nick, otherwise i'll be breaking it down.

Here is a link to the Trackskills site and the dates for this year.

www.trackskills.com/dates.html

A lot of full throttle time at Kirkiston as you know with the outfit, think we did about 10 or 12 x 15 minute sessions before we ran out of fuel. Cant complain about using fuel but, not much fun without it!!

Won't make the 20th John, going to Rome end of the month and need the cash for that.

Update, car is back from the bodyshop, I have the radiator in, there is a difference in size from N/A to Turbo. Turbo rad being bigger. Had a bit of grief fitting it, but she is now snug as a bug and as Toyota intended.

Forgot to get coolant, so will sort that out tomorrow and downloaded pictures to my laptop in work. Didn't get a chance to upload anything yet.
