What First? 2 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 2
Hi all, so I have just bought a 1991 rev1 n/a. Got a mechanic to look it over for me and needed 3 ball joints and new front discs and pads. Was just wondering what ppl think I should start with? I was thinking new exhaust or induction kit but am open to suggestions. I will post some pics soon.

You can get a cheap cone filter in most motor factors, market or ebay.

Ive got a custom made exhaust, made it myself
Here is a vid of what it sounds like, its pretty loud.

And since the cat is removed before fitting this exhaust that 90degree bend was made like that for a little back pressure.
straight bolt on, decat and very light, it dosent get better than this pm me if ur interested.

Its got a cone in it already but it looks pretty old and dirty. was considering trying out 1 of the wash kits for them but wasnt sure if they actually worked.

K&N make good washable filters.

A slightly larger exhaust will help.

Remember that when installing non-Toyota parts that it could affect your motor insurance.

Tip!

When installing new parts, disconnect the battery for a minute then reconnect. This will reset the ecu and take advantage of the new part.

Make sure you have codes if you have a coded radio though.

thanks for the tip with the battery i will make sure i do that. My insurance company insures modified cars anyway so shouldnt be a problem maybe just an increase in my premium. Also the ariel is snapped off the car is this a big job to replace or can it be done yourself if i source the part?

The ariel is a easy diy job.

Disconnect the power lead and antenna lead.

There are just a few bolts holding it in behind the boot carpet.

You wont get huge power out of a n/a MR2, but you can improve the handling.

If you haven't got new brake pads yet, I would recommend Red Stuff pads which I think work brilliantly.

I know i wont get any major power boosts without swapping to a turbo. I am using this car as a starter project and to get use to how it drives before I go power mad lol. I have read the handling on it can be a bit tricky so any advice on how to improve it greatly appreciated. Have just had new pads and discs put on front along with 3 new ball joints so next is either exhaust or suspension and maybe new spoiler.

Well thats a smart thing you did getting an n/a to get used to.
If you are ever planning to upgrade to turbo by doing an engine swap you may start looking for a crashed rev3 turbo now because it could take nearly a year to find, thats how long it took me.
A year is more than enough to get used to your car.
But for now just buy the bigger rev3 breaks (if you dont have them already), suspension, spoiler, bodykit, braided brake lines, all the things you can keep if you decide to swap the engine.
(n/a exhaust wont fit onto turbo)

Rev3 discs are larger in diameter so I expect you would need the calipers too.
