Creaking floorboards help 6 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 213
We had our attic converted years ago and it was tongue and grooved boards put down with a nail gun. On top of this, i laid a laminate floor.

Recently the creaking has gotten very bad. So, today i cleared out the room, took all skirting boards off and started to take up the laminate floor.

I am about half way across the room and said i'd start on screwing down the boards - the middle of the floor is the worst.

I put one screw in each board where it met the joist underneath. I done this for about 6 boards the length of the room. I walked on that area i just done and there is still creaking.

So, i've a few questions !

Is one screw enough where it meets the joist ? There are two nails already there.

Also, do i need to do the whole floor first ? e.g. when i walk on the "fixed" area, is it creaking because its all joined and the creak will come from an adjoining board ?

i dont think their is much u can do about this, its a solid floor u can never predict weather its gonna creak buckle all that jazz maybe just throw more screws into in. is the attic damp? u see it wasnt done right first day it shouldnt of been nailed threw the top it should of been nailed between the grooves to hide the nails im not sure if this would effect the creaking looks like just normal nails were used thats whats creaking id say the nails in the timber

LOL, I came in to this thread thinking you meant the floor of the Spider was creaking

I'm no expert on flooring so I can't really comment bar saying that the photo looks normal to me, the creaking is sometimes caused by warped wood moving up and down on the offending nail(s). Applying oil has been recommended to me in the past but I never found that worked very well in practice.

@Quandry - the floor in the Spider is probably the only bit of it that isn't making strange noises !

@Smurfster - just put it in around each nail ? What about where the tongue sits into the groove. When i got a new floor years ago in my living room, i remember the guy putting nails or screws into the tongue/groove section - to effectively lock them into each other. Do you reckon the creaking might come from the tongue/groove section as well as the nails ?

How big are the boards that are beneath the laminate? and I presume you put underlay under the laminate?

About 6" wide by around 13 foot long.

Yeah - have underlay.

Waiting for driver to recharge and going to put in 3 screws per board/joist

I'd say maybe go down to B&Q and get some of the wide ones, I have a few in the attic if you want to try them to see if they make a difference,

It'd be a huge job to take up the existing tongue and grooved planks and to replace with wide ones. They go the length of the room and sit under the plasterboard at each end

I've 400 screws. So, i'll put all them in and some wd40. If it still creaks, i'll buy a set of ear plugs

Don't go near it with wd40! I'd say it's the only thing it won't cure. Boards nailed in the grove (secret nailing) is more for ascetics than strength. More common for hardwood floors. If there's movement or springing in the joists the nails in the bridging between joists will creak. If this is the case turn up the tv or the stereo

Other option may be to ply out the floor with 3/4 cheap shuttering ply and lay your laminate on that.

Either lift the T&G to sheet the floor (best option) or do as smurfster says:yes:

The creaking could be the joists rather than the T&G, so all the screws and glue in the world wont make a difference.

When your roof space was 'converted' were your joists (probably 4 inch deep) strengthened or replace with 6" deep ones??

A roof space is normally floored with 4" joists which are generally considered not strong enough for a proper floor. The joist can be doubled up but better replaced with 6" - anything else is half a job and will give strength problems therefore movement problems ultimately creaking etc.

Another reason for always being suspicious of the cheapest quote as a proper roofspace conversion is usually very expensive but you will get some 'specialists' (aka cowboys) that will do half a job and leave you with problems.

If I were looking at it I would be lifting some T&G to see what (if anything) was done below.

Also, those nails look like they have been hammered in .... not nail gun - the heads are quite large for a nail gun and there are hammer marks around them including punch marks where they have been driven below the wood surface.

The joists were definitely replaced. It was a whole new "floating floor". Two massive steel beams going the length of the room and new, big joists across.

I don't have the time to go taking up the T&G floor as well.

Since i posted earlier, i put in 3 screws per joist/board and it has definitely improved a lot. So, i will try get some more adjoining boards done tomorrow and see how it goes.

The room is in use - so, i have to get it sorted in next day or two. If i had the time, i'd look at re-flooring it.

no they were done with a pin gun alright but just shouldnt be put threw the top of the board its the nails coming up again thats what the creaking is, did you ever pull a long nail out of a piece of timber same creak as that thats why i suggest putting in a few screws to hold it in place

If it was me, I would put 3 screws in at every point where a board crosses a joist, I mean where you have 2 nails I would put 3 screws.

Why worry about whats enough when you can do that, are you likely to go through lifting the floor again if 1 per joist is not enough rather than just do that now when its up?

That is the best way to do it, sounds like a proper job.

You will hopefully get some joy screwing the T&G planks
