saw my first 86 today on the road. In terms fo looks, I def stand by my previous comments .... very poor effort that is more disappointing in the flesh than in pictures.

It would need to drive like a MF, but even then I dont know that I would by a car that looks like a Prius coupe

I seen one about 15 mins ago in Sandyford industrial estate. There were no number plates on it and it looked like it was being driven by a mechanic from the Toyota garage round the corner

Was in Newcastle over the weekend, one of these pulled up behind us at a roundabout.
The transition from the pictures originally posted on the web to real life was disappointing.
Maybe its rose tinted glasses but the original AE86 had a certain presence which has been lost in its revised form, looks more like a Coupe Auris, where i was expecting something alot sportier.
Maybe a drive in one will change my mind but I certainly won't be rushing with a deposit

Nice Video Quandry - lads I dunno what yer talking about cos imo, and I know everyone's entitled to one, but I think the GT86 is the nicest looking, coolest, classest, meanest 'affordable' coupe on sale this year.
Indeed for many years, Prob since the mk2 went outta production !!!
I hope I'm not annoying anyone by saying this but with the exception of the first concepts projector headlights, which I think looked WAYY better, I prefer this production model in every other way. Want 1 !

Def looks the best out of those 3, turbo cars nowadays have crap soundtracks so id have the boxer engine over them, have seen vids of the gt86 hitting 60 in low 6's so maybe not to far off the TT on a 1/4 mile.

Seen the car in the flesh this morning its a tidy looking machine. I am not that interested in the looks of it more the drive and I will push the sales guy later to see about getting one.

Couple of photos from my phone.

I meant a drive, really trying not to sell everything to buy one of these especially after sitting in it, this could only get worse if I drive one.

This one is in Tadgh Riordan in Ashbourne, think its just for display at the moment.

Went to view the one in Cogans Carrigaline and, having been looking forward to seeing the GT86 for ages, was really dissapointed.

It looks like a slightly more upmarket Hyundai Coupe, the interior was a bit tacky, the plastics were not even as good quality as in my mk2 MR2.

Granted I didn't get to drive it and maby if I did my opinion would change a little. But for that money you would be expecting the complete package in terms of styling, interior and driving experience.

The rear lights and wheels look crap and the build felt a bit flimsey compared to new European cars.

Even for thirty grand you could probably find much better cars for the money, but 40k is really taking the piss.

I was happy to be driving home in my mk2 MR2, stylistically at least a far better car.

Should have a test drive on Saturday :-D Will let ye all know how I get on. Been hearing mixed opinions on this from this forum and a few others especially on the overall finish. Hopefully the drive will tell another story and put a small on my face!! (fingers crossed for an enthusastic sales man :-P).

Re: Toyota GT86 6 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 35
Bit late with the update on the test drive but have to say I enjoyed it

The car looks very well in the flesh much better than I thought it would from the pics. But I do think it will be a bit in your face for some. The alloys however are a major let down and detract from the look of the car. The sales man said the same thing and there are no alternative options

The first thing I noticed when sitting into the car is the superb driving position I can say with confidence its one of the nicest I have experience and have driven 911's/Ferrari!! The seat hugs the waist nicely and the well is placed at just the right angle with a lovely digital speed display and very readable cluster in view with no obstruction. I always find that the display cluster is half hidden when driving some cars haha

Next the steering is lovely with a nice weighty feel and is very responsive with quick imputs rewarded. It gives nice feedback from the road and you know what the cars doing. granted I didnt trash it around on the test drive the sales man was more than happy for to clip along at a nice pace

Te ride was a bit stiffer than i expected so you will feel the bumps more than your average car. Will definitely be a turn-off for some. I at no time felt uncomforatable and like i said the seats keep your firmly in place.

Lastly and prob most importantly is the engine and here like many have said is a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. It takes alot to get it really moving all the power is higher up and when you get there the sound from the eingine is mediocre at best not something I would want to hear all day long. The sixth gear will definitely help on the motorway but it is very long and wont be much use on the local roads of west cork haha

All in all its a nice car and definitely something I would consider down the line if I decide to replace the MR-2 but will be a second hand purchase as currently the sticker price isnt justified.
Its not Toyotas fault as its selling for around 30,000 euro in the UK we just happen to get shafted by VRT. If this car had come in at the 28-30 price range it would be a great purchase or if they do something about the engine. A nice 2litre turbo lump would make a world of difference to the value prospect but I think I'd prefer a non subaru boxer engine if they go that route. Bring back the 3s-gte I say

Thats my two cents worth and looks like i wont be replacing the 2 any time soon.

Re: Toyota GT86 6 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 70
I had a test drive in the GT86 today and I have to agree with a lot that Basch reported in his review. Its nice but the price is ott, if it was around the 28-30k I could see it shifting. The sales guy told me that the Hyundai Velestor was about 15k cheaper so as coupes go they are miles apart in price. I found that the cabin felt a bit tight but then again that could be just me having a tbar deuce. Seats were nice and when you hit 4k revs the sound of the exhaust was nice. Rear legroom looked VERY tight even for kids but then again its not designed for 4.

If you get a chance do take it for a spin. I for one will look at it again in a few years possibly as a replacement for my MR2. Did I really say that out loud!!!!

AE86 vs GT86

Both cut from same cloth it seems proof toyota had major involvement in the chassis not soley subaru as what RWD heritage do they have.

Re: Toyota GT86 6 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 35
All these good reviews But as one knows they are from the land of her Majesty the Queen where the serfs arent charged VRT!!!

I still think it needs a supercharger/turbocharger or a engine capacity bump to make me a die hard convert there just isnt the power there for the size of car. The original AE86 was great cause it weight sweet feck all so gettin the back end out wasnt an issue, the GT86 on the otherhand is planted for the most part.

I aint asking for massive power but in and around the 260/280bhp mark would be nice and put it inline with a 370z and our mr2's
