Looks really nice! KC slipsliderG for posting up the pics.

In some of the other pics I saw the rear tires look pretty skinny alright. Still it must handle ok or Toyota would not release it I guess.

I think it's a shame that Toyota have toned down the aggressive look of the concept car so much. Remember the first photos that were 'leaked' of this car ...

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Then the trims, look, wheel spec, ride hieght etc all got worse/higher ....

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Now what we are left with is very tame in comparison.

It's a real shame as the first images were exciting, promising a decent car from Toyota with performance and looks to match. What we end up getting is an average looking car with average performance and (I would assume) average handling. The final product is only slightly more attractive (as a complete package) as a Focus or similar car.

Things could have been so much better

since my previous post I have now watched the video above .... after this I like this car even less now.

Apart from the diffuser the rear of the car is brutally ugly and boring, the front (as mentioned) is tame - I think there numerous better or more aggressive looking cars out there that don't even claim to be sports cars.

But definitely the worst bit of this car for me is the dashboard:

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

This looks like they have taken the MR2 MK3 dash from the early 00's and tried to update it with some red LED displays from 2002. Dashboards now are meant to be much more ergonomic than this and a hell of a lot more pleasing to the eye ....

for example

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

... I could go on.

Shame on you Toyota, absolute shame on you. You should hang your head on this one.

I see your point on the outside styling Spanky. The Toyota GT86 did sort of get dulled down a bit from the FT86 drawings and concept cars. Maybe they're making room to make the facelift model more attractive??

On the interior, I quite like the dash styling myself it's more 'plain sports', the only thing I don't like is the steering wheel which looks like it came out of a milk float.

As they seem to be expecting all the drifters to latch on to this car maybe they borrowed the steering wheel from the latest (shudders) Yaris as it would be the first thing to be replaced by a tuner. Probably TRD are preparing a quality wheel with many different colour options and a sky high price tag as we speak.

I found another video from a Japanese car site I visit from time to time and it explains (from Toyotas POV) the thoughts and reasons behind why the car is the way it is.

Also a cool pic...

For an extra 5 grand you can have a second hand gtr. Or for the same money a new 370z with three year service free warranty. Nissan are the only Japanese company that seem to have any balls at the minute.

Def would have the 370 ahead of the 86... better inside, outside and a higher number so must be better

Overall I like it. It's sort of looks like a cross between a Supra and LFA just minus a lot of power.

Random thought here but I wonder if a new MR2 would be called 'Toyota GT20' or GT11, or GT30...

Toyota GT86

Does seem to have a ring to it.

Im quite partial to the wee Honda roadster.

@quan: I think the lights are similar but the cars couldnt be more different. The lfa proves they know how to do it, they just gave the wrong guy the project to make the concept buildable

Re: When is this FT86 / GT86 turning up anyway? 7 Years ago Karma: 313
hmm, so that's confusing. The car is called a:

Toyota GT86
Subaru BRZ
Scion FRS

A bit schitzophrenic?

In honesty I am not sure how this is going to work out as if you take 100% of the buyers, then divide them by three then that is what they're going to be reporting through each different company. This car will have to sell in a huge volume or else it will be branded as another 'Toyota Sports Car failure'

I hope they don't try this approach if they get around to an MR2 Mk4!

Here's some Youtube footage from HKS. Dyno results look a little weak? I hope that is the stock dyno and not with the HKS upgrades!!!

Why isn't there a subtitles button on youtube already?!
Gotta learn me some japanese! lol

Im guessing that dyno was stock, everything looked pretty standard under the engine etc when they dynoed it.
How much better does that car look with a different set of wheels from the OEM ones supplied, they are weak sauce!

A little birdy tells me that TOMORROW Toyota Ireland will be putting up a web page dedicated to the GT86!?

Good news as up until now I wondered if Ireland would get the car at all.

I think it's a great idea to start selling it in summer time as sales would be dismal in this weather, hopefully consumer confidence will be up around summer time but please please please Toyota price it affordable so it's not a flop!

More news from Toyota, official UK starting price has been posted up of £25k, that should mean its 30k in ROI though I Im sure the irish government will end up making it much more.

"The new Toyota GT 86 will cost from £24,995 when sales start in June. That is the entry, on-the-road price for the all-new sports coupe; further pricing and specification details will be announced nearer the time of launch.

Advance orders are being taken for the GT 86, with many UK customers already signed up to be among the first to take ownership of the car when it arrives here this summer. To find out more about GT 86, click here, or visit our online photo gallery for an even closer look."

Quandry it doesnt look good tbh, just did a quick and dirty comparison of the VRT on a Renault Megane GT 2.0 Turbo and its 10,800 euro!! Thats with an open market selling price of 27,800 euro.

So taking the uk price for the GT86, removing vat and then adding irish vat and vrt looks to make the price in the 40k bracket.

I know its not the most accurate but unless Toyota have a very basic stripped down version for the Irish market I feel we are gonna get shafted

Update: And to be fair its no fault of Toyota's, the car is going to have a VAT rate of 23% and VRT of between 24% --> 32% which is emissions dependent. I just found on the inter webs its 160g/km for the GT86 which puts it at a VRT rate of 24% so looking at a price of 38k upwards. The worst thing being VRT is calculated at base cost + VAT! So we get taxed on tax , along with double taxation
