Callaghans tyre centre is in Burt, co. Donegal. About five years ago I took my MR2 in for a full 4 wheel alignment. The guy seemed friendly but talked a lot of crap that I'll not get into. I knew that this job takes quite a while to do so I left the car there and went to my work. Later that day my wife took me to collect my car. When I got home there was a strong smell of rubber, which turned out to be the tyre rubbing against the coil spring. It had permanently damaged the Bridgestone tyre. I had to adjust the suspension to move the wheel off the spring. The next day I went back and complained and was told it would be sorted. At the end of the day I went back again and when I looked at the mileometer it had changed ie some cowboy had gone for a run in it. There was a bad atmosphere in the office and was told that I would have to pay €200 for labour. They would not replace the damaged tyre and would not admit to taking the car for a drive. I phoned my solicitor for advice and was told to put it down to a shitty experience because legal fees would cost a lot more than it's worth.

So if you value your car and don't want greedy cowboys working on it, don't take it to Callaghans Tyre Center in Burt, Co.Donegal !

I went there looking to buy alloys and the guys were cheeky to me so I took my business elsewhere.
I also heard a few bad stories about their "performance exhaust" work, they were referred to as hatchet men.
Whereabouts you from anyways Marty?

This is a forum where people share their experiences, the thread is entitled buyer/seller feedback, we both shared our experience or feedback of the place which was not a positive one... I'd like to see them do anything about it!

I'm just saying what i have heard.. i agree with the slating.
You might be surprised what a company would do to try and correct their "good" reputation.

you will prob never hear anything at all man, was just giving a heads up for future reference is all.

Really would make you sick though the way some companies deal with your property. So hard to find a decent place that will do work 100% honestly and at a good price.
I'm yet to find any place(bar 1) that has done work exactly as i want first time!
I used a mechanic once who did nixers in his home garage and he did a cambelt and full service for me. When i arrived to collect, he was putting a screw into my door handle that was missing before i brought it in.. He also told me everything else that would need future attention. All without being asked! Things like that, the attention to detail of a job really shows how decent and dedicated a person is!
Unfortunately he moved and i only ever got to use him the once.. Been looking for a replacement mechanic ever since lol

Infamous I am in Buncrana.

Even though it was about five years ago, I thought that it should be known to other motorists how these guys operate their business. I would rather warn people about Callaghans shady business than them finding out the hard way.

Yeah I agree and it was much more recently when I was attempting to deal with them!
I found the guys down at Carrigans much more helpful and easy to deal with.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind.

Although you might want to re-word that last sentence, some of the guys here like the craic and may take another meaning from it lol.

I had a shifu with Atlas on the Kylemore road also and will never go back there. It's invaluable to get someone trustworthy at the end of the day. The problem is finding them!

I had a problem with dealer near me, one of my cars failed on emmisions, dropped it into them, then rang and said i could pick it up, charged me 100 and odd quid and gave me a sheets with test results showing fine, went up to the nct centre the next day and it failed again, showed them the test the garage did after the supposidly fixed the problem and they pointed out that the garage test they did on my emmisions had a duration of a whole 6 seconds!! and had the print out to prove it.
My next door neighbour went to the same garage for the advertised €90 service, he rang her back and said her car was leaking oil and it needed a new oil pan, she knocked into me and asked me and i told her to pick it up straight away (only around the corner) and I'd have a quick look as theres no oil on her drive, had a look under and it looked like the bolt was loosened, went upto them and questioned them and they said it "would need to be done in 6 months anyway" WTF, And then my other neighbour 3 doors down got a bill of 800 wuid for the timing belt needing to be changed, bit strange considering his car used a chain not a belt and the chain would in theory have another 60k on it before needing to be looked at.

I now use 2 different mechanics who take my car in their spare time to service it etc, and i use them more regular than I would have used a main dealer etc as they charge a lot less and do a better job, I think this is the way alot of people are doing it now aswell as doing the basics themselves.

Yeah main dealers are criminals. I took the jeep to a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer to have the rear diff looked at, bit of rubbing. They reckoned I needed a new diff at a cost of 2,500K plus the front transfer case looked dodgy!

Brought it to a specialist guy to reconditions gearboxes and diffs. He had a look and said it needs a new gear, some bearings and fresh diff oil with some special additive. Sorted 300 euro.

Also, my drivers heated seat is not working, common fault on the Grand Cherokee. 600 euro quote from the dealer. I did some research on the web and fixed it myself for free.

Assholes....Name and shame, it's allowed nowadays. Sure watching the TV, they are all slating each other. For example, Wimax actual mention eircom, "don't pay eircoms line rental".....Im sure you can think of a dozen more examples.

i sent my mr2 to a main toyota dealer back in 2007 to get the timing belt done . i was quoted €600 before they did it .they rang me the following day and told me they have to charge me an extra €300 for labour because they had trouble getting the pulley off. like a f£*^!)g idiot i paid it . these are to mention just a few of the problems

1 they left an earth strap disconnected
2 it had done 6 miles of a test drive
3 they left the intercooler fan disconnected
4 absolutley destroyed the side of my intercooler taking it out
5 there was a large chip gone out of my engine lid

when i confronted them they denied everything & my solicitor was just as useless

I was ask for €600 labour from main dealer for a job and told it would be 4 figs by the time the job was finished. Still thinking about it now. They told me not to drive the car as it might have a problem with the gears! Gears seam fine to me... Not sure what to do. They have me panicked now!
I will try and put up a post for the job.

Not sure where you are based, guys, but under UK law it is illegal and considered professionally negligent for any mechanic to carry out unauthorised work on your car or to charge you substantially more than quoted.

If this happens you simply refuse to pay the extra stating your reason why and ask them to either hand your car back as it sits, or, undo the additional/unauthorised work. If they refuse either then you call the police and report it.

I had this last week with a Honda garage. Left the car in cause of clutch slip (replaced by them 8 months ago). Left the car with them so they could test drive it. They test drove it, took it to their workshop, removed old clutch and fitted new clutch before calling me to say that Honda would cover most of the costs but wanted me to contribute £170. I was to collect the car the next day but told them I wouldn't be paying anything for it.

The next day I took legal advice, realised I was 100% in the right then explained (politely) to the guy that they could either put the old clutch back in OR hand me the car as it was OR I would contact the police to pursue the matter through the courts. I also said I had taken legal advice. This seemed to scare hte shit out of them and less than 1 hour later I had my car back with its new clutch in, no charge and washed/vacuumed.

This was a main Honda dealer too.

Watch them ... scumming bastards will try to fleece you and will sometimes use illegal tactics to do so.

Bear in mind, Rep of Ireland law might be different

Good to know.

These bastards should be treated with the same disrespect they treat their customers with. It seems to be more prevalent in main dealers (for servicing), where you would think they would know better.

Just does know harm to know where you stand legally, so if it happens you can challenge it immediately.

In my case, they didn't question it and (kind of) apologised. They did try to say there was no warranty on the work ... also not entirely legal. I told the service guy that I would have the car back to him if the clutch failed within 15k miles (twice the mileage it took me to realise the most recent fault).

It's only fair to point out that they are not all crooks and the majority of car maintenance/servicing companies are probably fair. This is the first problem I have had in nearly 20 years of driving.
