Diesel MR2 ! 9 Years ago Karma: 3
Im thinking this could be an interesting project .

I would idealy like to use a Merc V6 CDI motor but this would be way to much work , so Im thinking VW TDI engine a 130 bph version .

What Toyota options are there ?

Any thoughts ???

why use a non toyota engine when toyota have a brilliant diesel engine? the d4d.
lots of different power options and of course the toyota reliability.

the 2.2 is a 175bhp stock. i have an is 220d with this engine but i would not be fan. i have a a6 130 tdi chipped to 150 which is far superior imo. i believe there are limited options for uping the power of the d4d engines bar cheap resitors etc.

i have always liked the idea of putting a modern diesel in a 2. i think an lsd would be a must though with the gearbox choice, and i dont think toyota have one on any of their diesel gearboxes

a 175bhp diesel would give you plenty of go with no real need for modding. The torque would be huge with that (likely over 300).

the only reason for using a Toyota engine would be that the engine mounts might line up. I seen this on another website were a guy was thinking of a diesel conversion.

When this engine was sold in the Auris, Toyota touted it as the sports model. It done 0-60 in about 8(ish) seconds, so you would expect it to be quicker in a 2. I would imagine that performance would be similar or slightly better than a standard rev3+ NA.

Dont be thinking that it will necessarily be economical. I have a 2.2D Civic (140bhp) which averages about 40mpg - rush hour driving and motorway cruising mainly, not driven hard as I have the tubby for that

Id be happy with getting 40 mpg from the 2 , all it ever manages now is about 20 mpg.

I think Ill look a 2.2 toyota engine then , would the original 2 box be suitable though . Has any one got the final drive figures each gear box .

I wouldn't think the standard MR2 gearbox would suit. The 2.2 175bhp D4D delivers 300lbft of torque. A standard 2 tubby (rev3) is about 200 or less. I reckon the diesel engine would soon twist the crap out of the 2 box.

You would definitely need a new clutch and flywheel so you would be better looking for an engine with box if possible.

The stock clutch should be good for near to 300lb ft - but with daily use at that level, you would need to upgrade it at some stage.

Gearbox should be able to take much more than that.

The gearing in an MR2 gearbox would be all wrong. You would need the box that is suited to the engine. Might be tricky enough to find one that has the shifter mechansim etc on the right side for an MR2

an engine with an automatic box might make it easier. You would get the whole package and dont need to worry about the mechanism lining up - I'm presuming an auto box has a cable to it or similar

If it were me, I'd go with an engine from an older merc C250 turbo diesel, they have LSD etc. and they're bulletproof if cared for correctly.

Its looking like it would be too much hassle , if the stock box wont work with a deisel engine . Id like to have had this much as a starting point .

This was discussed several times on TwoBrutal, there is an option out there that can work, how easily is another thing. Probably need an element of custom drive shafts and then the hassle of direct injection and the pressures involved in that. But I can't remember it was so long ago (probably more than 7 seconds )

Nothing is impossible Steve, however if you want to go for a straight V6 petrol swap I have a full kit here for an SW20 using the 3VZFE engine, if you are interested. Only needs the gearbox and drive shafts from your own car.

Thanks for the offer Ray , but id not want a larger petrol engine .
Its a killer running 2 petrol cars , the MR2 and a Merc , that only manage 20 odd MPGs . I was thinking a diesel would ease things a little .

I was thinking that alright Steve, but said I would put it out there anyway, as I know you would be well capable of doing the conversion.

Re: Diesel MR2 ! 6 Years, 4 Months ago
Hey, I am after getting a 2.2 Turbo Diesel from a 1996 Camry XJ, fitted into my 91 G-Limited, just changed those details properly on the logbook and it's road legal.

I used the stock 5-speed transmission and flywheel from the MR2, since three of the four mounts were on the gearbox, I only had to get the offside mount on the engine fabricated to fit properly, and I had to get custom bolts made for the Flywheel to mount on to the crankshaft, I did so because the Camry was an automatic and I wanted to see if it was possible to fit the MR2 gearbox.

Then, you'll have to get the E.C.U. and wiring loom of that diesel engine and will also have to change the rev. counter with a diesel rev. counter. You won't have to change the wiring for the interior electricals and you can keep the electric motor assisted steering.

Just find the right individual to do it for you and it'll all be fine.

Oh I missed something. The exhaust system on the 3CT engine i.e. the 2.2 Turbo Diesel engine, is on the back, unlike the 3SGE with it in front. All we did was, weld the stock MR2 muffler straight to the downpipe from the turbocharger. Or if you want, you can spend some money and get a custom high-flow manifold made, to fit a Variable Geometry Turbocharger, probably from an Audi, to make things a whole level better and exciting.

I am yet to take my car to college to do a dyno-test, but all I know is that the 3CT did 65mpg in that Camry, so it must be a lot better in the MR2.

Mjmitch did a D4D swap, and it looked like a factory job,
So he may be able to answer most of your questions.
He said he got 900km on a full tank of diesel which is pretty awesome.
He had a thread up but i cant find it...

lol, the 2.2 D4D engines were plagued with head gasket failure. We had Avensis' in all the time for this and other engine issues. Its fairly widely accepted that Toyota failed big time on this.

Not sure if your post was a joke or not?

You should be hunh upside down and gelded for considering replacing that good 3SG engine with any dirty, oil burning bastardisation of the beautiful, 4 stroke internal combustion petrol engine lol.

Just my thoughts on the subject
