Hey guys,

I have a clunking sound on acceleration when turning slowly and ever so slightly when taking off. Any idea what this might be? It only happens when on the accelerator so if turning slowly and leave off gas it goes away but clunks again when press the accelerator :/

Sounds bit like a gearbox man.. Could be the diff is breaking up, also check your cv joints that the boost arnt cracked and the greas hasn't gone out of them.

Thanks for the reply has become more noticeable since I put in the new clutch, changed the gearbox oil and no metal flakes or anything in it so could it still be a diff? Also afaik its a TRD 2-way mechanical clutch diff and hear these can make a clunking sound. Any way to check cv/boots without jacking up car?

That's what it is man if its a 2 way it will be noisey as fuck. I have a 2way in mine and its very tight. Clunks and bangs all the time.. What oil did you put in? Apparently some of the LSD oils are very good at quieting the diff's down so if you changed the oil that's probaly why you can hear it now

its mt90 i think is the one same as was in it but haven't driven it much since the clutch change maybe it just needs to settle back in. Ya there is no noise other than the slow corners and with throttle so prob just the 2-way! What diff do you have in yours out of curiosity?

Hey Baz

When i got the TRD diff, it always made the clunking sound (like a CV joint gone) basically when it was on full lock and slow. So, 3 point turns and the like. But when i got the turbo swap, the guy explained that it was normal with the diff.

Then when i was speaking to Joe (rip) over the phone, i had mentioned that i thought i had a TRD diff but wasn't sure. He then asked me if i heard a clunking sound when on full lock etc ! So, i was relieved that he had experience with them and it was normal.

I know no more about them but it was reassuring when i hadn't described the noise to Joe and he said it to me.

Anyway, hth

Maybe post on IMOC or MR2oc.com and see if anyone has experience with the TRD diff ?

Thanks Spidey,

I was pretty confident it was the diff making the noise as its a 2-way just after the oil change its a bit more prevalent so was just double checking for my own piece of mind haha

I just to have cusco 2 way (still have it in the shed) and don't remember clunking noise-s more like jumping on roundabouts and on full lock,

It was tight as hell, on long corners I had to correct it each time I pressed or depressed accelerator, not mentioning trowing back out on slip roads - on the wet at say 80km/h in slight bend, I lifted my foot ones and car went tokyo on me...

But if you wanted to have fun , that was brilliant.

I drove welded diff 200sx and that was different ball game hehe,

This one (my two)was drivable once you knew you have 2-way all the time, so same corner same speed but at constant level you didn't notice nothing , but take your foot off rapidly and back was trying to brake off, put your foot down however and whole car wanted go strait - I wasn't a fan as my two serves more as GT to me, but Joe (rip) loved it, and showed me few tricks, couldn't believe stuff he did with my two.
