Alternator advice needed urgently! 6 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 59
The alternator in my rev3 turbo is goosed (oval plug).Went to hornibrooks Toyota garage and got one for €180, turns out it was for a supra! Had to bring that back as it wouldn't fit, so now they're looking for €280 (not genuine toyota part)for a high amp one for an n/a, will these even work in my car? Starting to think I might be better off getting my one rebuilt for approx €80 but will be travelling to nurburgring in August and don't want the worry of alternator clapping out halfway across Europe anyone had there's rebuilt or had any issues with rebuilt ones? Really need to know soon as I will be forking over €280 tomorrow otherwise

For piece of mind I would go with the one from Toyota, how much money do you stand to loose if the alternator calves on the road trip. Then getting a replacement for an MR2 on the continent would take a long time.

I got quote from my local Toyota dealer for exchange unit from Toyota for €340 including vat. That's brand new, with warranty and genuine. (pricy)
Some reconditioned alternators will have warranty for 3 months.
To be honest I really wouldn't mess with higher amp alternators or whatever else is different. For my year m2 is 3 different alternators and getting wrong one on car it just simply doesn't work.
corkmr2 got alternator replaced vs new one few months ago. I wounder what he paid and where he got it?
If you get 2nd hand or reconditioned alternator get it dirty cheap as you don't know when it will pack again, If you get new one, get a proper one.

@silvelux I think new is the way to go by the sound of things, poor bank account is taking an awful beating but the car is 19yrs old I suppose

Has to be done man. Poor bank account will be with big hole when the alternator will pack up halfway your journey or elsewhere. I don't mind to change it myself, on my m2 it takes about 3 hours on rainy day to take it off and put it back on roadside.

Ah bummer tout you might be around Dublin. Do you not know of any good motor factors or auto electrision around your area? You could still get new but will be half the price of one from toyota. And probaly the same make as toyota one. Most of the time with genuine parts your just paying for the toyota stamp..

@silverlux it's up on a friends ramp so won't be too much hassle put it in.

@shemo it's a friend of mine is getting it for me ex vat, so save a little there at least!

The part number I'm looking for is 27060-74500, it shouldn't be this bloody hard to get the right one should it!!!

My closest dealer is in Kanturk, ya man so far has been always spot on and responds on time. They post parts as well. If ya want can pm contact details. Cozzy was dealing with some useless Toyota dealer in Cork, late response, can't locate parts on time etc. I guess local small dealers are looking after their peeps.

Thanks mate, kc'd for the help I saw their website on line actually I think, might give them a shout if I have no luck with the person I have been dealing with tomorrow. Really annoying as my 2 is my daily driver and I'm currently driving an ex Royal Mail post van just to get around p.s. the sticker on the back of them that says they are limited to 70mph is true!!
