TOPIC: What's involved in a service?

What's involved in a service? 6 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 11
I recently disassembled my brake calipers and greased them as I have had more problems with the brakes than any other part of the car over the last 6 years. Having done it I'm feeling brave as I was always intimidated by the thought of disimantling my mr2 in case I could not get it back together again. Now I am contemplating servicing my own car. So can anyone explain what's involved and where is best to get the parts? So far I have:

Oil filter

Air filter

Spark plugs

Oil change

Bulbs/wipers

Cheers all

Dizzy cap and rotor are a good idea if they haven't been changed in a while-easy job too.

Change coolant(toyota for life) you need to know what your doing cos its a bit tricky.

And also Gearbox oil.

Thats all i can think of

Not much to a service tbh has long as you take your time,

Oil filter = I use the Toyota (main dealers)one every time (Denso Branded) its only €9

Air filter = TBH its fine to do this every third service I reckon, I changed mine when I got the car but it was probably fine: Inspect it during the oil change

Spark plugs - 60,000 mls approx life on Iridiums

Be careful changing the sparkplugs it has be easy to cross thread them: trick is to use a piece of garden hose to screw them in, and then tighte with a ratchet

Oil change - take exactly 4litres with the filter, warm the engine loosen the sump plugs and drain, while your at it theres no harm in changing to a magnetic sump plug
Fill up the filter with some oil before putting it on.When tightening the sump plug careful not to overtighten it.

get a cup wrench to remove the filter - much neater and easier then a strap. Halfords are doing castrol magnatec 10w40 4litres for 24.50 at the moment.

Bulbs/wipers

Bulbs - changed a load of mine to LED - www.mr2.ie/mr2-forum/19-body-wheels-and-kits/50508-leds

Normal HL bulbs I just grabbed a bulb kit in Aldi for €6 - still working great months later.

Wipers I got bosch ones this time from wiperblades.co.uk

...theres an inspection list in the BGB that covers the brake vacums, etc for the points check.

x2 on the coolant, maybe take the above on and move on to the coolant when your more versed with the car as its not the easiest in the world but once every 4 years is grand!

apart from the above keep a spreadsheet in google docs and record all your maintenance with dates and mileage, etc keep receipts in a folder as well it'll give piece of mind to anyone buying your car when that dreaded day comes

Ha a bit more thorough than my post!

Interesting tip with the garden hose. The ratchet extension can also be used in hand just to sit the plugs in and hand tighten them-then attach the ratchet to tighten them that last quarter turn.

you need the ratchet extension as well the idea behind the garden hose is if the plug starts to cross thread the hose will slip off the end of the spark plug

I should point out my last post I was referring to an NA model specifically and measures may vary for turbos, etc.

No probs..I should also mention that, and this may seem obvious that you should never get under an unsupported car, always make sure you use wheel chocks and axle stands.

...stupid as it sounds, there has been a few unlucky people who learnt the hard way.
