Just get a cheap timing gun for 10-20euro on ebay, i got one and it always comes in handy and simple to use.
Dont worry about not having the skills to use it, it is really simple i think someone even wrote up a how to thread about setting ignition timing.
Or if you fancy a trip down to longford ive go a timing gun ill set ur timing straight in 5min

Well, the gun arrived in the post and i got to work on setting my timing. Possibly one of the easier jobs i have done on my 2 in the end.

Turns out my timing was retarded 5degrees. I now have it set as it should be at 10degrees BTDC.

And thanks spla for the offer of help

One question- is there any advantage in advancing the timing a couple of degrees on a 3sge engine or should i just leave where is??

Well done on setting the timing, if you advance the timing you are increasing the possiblity of detonation, also known as knock or pinking. You can get over this by increasing the octane rating of the fuel up to a point.

Detonation, knock and pinking cause heating up of the combustion process which can lead to this quite quickly if not dealt with.

However what you could do is go to a rolling road and advance the timing until knock is achieved, then dial it back to a safe level for the local conditions (temperature, humidity, fuel quality etc.). Best to get this done on the hottest day of the year as well IMO.

Some good gains from advancing the timing however I would not be tempted into to quickly without doing it correctly. A bad mix of the above local conditions and it could be time to look for a new engine ,crankshaft etc.

Mister2 this is the gun i bought but for some reason the price has went up by10 pounds!

He must have had them incorrectly priced when i got mine!

Its an easy job to be fair and one anyone could undertake. The hardest part was loosening the bolts holding the dizzy in place.

Slip-don't like the look of that piston at all, think il leave well alone as the car is running noticeably better since the adjustment and dont want to push my luck!

Awesome job man good to hear you got the timing sorted.
kc for going ahead and doing it yourself.
And i think the timing should be just left alone at 10.
