Exhaust flange - Backbox to Cat 4 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 106
Hi guys,

Anyone know of anywhere who'll repair the flanges (weld on new flanges) on the exhaust backbox and cat - the system is in good nick otherwise (got low emissions readings last NCT). Done a few patch up jobs that gets me through every couple of months (bandages, paste, etc), but looking for a permanent fix at this stage.

Cheers

edit: In North Dublin area.

Hey Eringobragh,
Did you ever get your flanges sorted?
My car failed NCT on Saturday evening and one of the fails was lambda reading. Yesterday I crawled under the car and found that the flange where the backbox joins the cat is in a bad state and lots of gases are leaking out (see leaky area in diagram below)

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

What options are available to sort this out as the backboxes are in good condition? Do you know if somewhere like Souhans can cut off the bad section of pipe and weld in a new section with flange?
Any opinions/help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Liam

Hey Liam

haven't got it welded yet but need to shortly ive a bodge in place to seal the pipe

It happened after the spirited drive at the joe o reilly run last year

so far its not blown out the other side of the cat

So basically what ive done has got me through the Last 2 NCTs

1) first off get some exhaust putty and lump it on - idle the car for a while and hover your hands around the flange looking for hot air making sure not to burn yourself

2) For added support I cut up a coke can into 2 shims and added both sides piercing a small hole in the can each side and use wire to attach

3) Got some silver heat proof tape in halfords to cover shims and putty

4) use an old fashioned exhaust bandage wrapping the wire tightly

....and your done - im on my third seal only because its bust a new hole but will look into a weld this year

emmissions were sound used dipetane and an Italian tuneup before the NCT

Any questions let me know

Thanks for the info. I did a similar repair a few years ago on an Alfa 156. It lasted for a little while. I never thought of the coke can. That's a handy idea for some light pliable metal. Unfortunately I'm trying to reduce my sugar intake so won't have Coke/Fanta cans. Can I use a beer can
I'm going to drop over to Souhans tomorrow and let them have a look. I'll let you know how I get on.

Yeah a weld is going to be the only job - a beer can should suffice

Let me know how you get on as it'll save me having to change a cat and a backbox that are otherwise perfect.

Well I went to Souhans yesterday and they took a look at my exhaust. They are going to cut out the join/flanges where the cat joins the backbox and are going to weld in a piece of stainless steel pipe. That job is costing €130.
I'm also getting them to set my lights as I failed that in the NCT also - €30.
For my final trick I got a new set of number plates as the NCT didn't like the fact that my plates have a trader name printed on the bottom border! Same plates passed the NCT last year!

Apologies for the delay in replying. Got exhaust mended by Souhans and they adjusted the lights also. Not a cheap exercise. Anyhow job done and once I had the new plates screwed on it passed the NCT.
Checkout this photo and see if you can spot the illegality!!

Sure, I was a right danger on the roads with those old number plates :woohoo:

They are strict with number plates because garda cars have cameras that scan every car plate that goes by and if you dont have insurance or tax it comes up on the system and if not lazy they can turn around and go after you, so if you have a different font the camera sometimes cant scan it properly.

Fair enough. I don't mind that at all. The reason for the failure in my case wasn't the font. It was the fact that there is a trader name in the border at the bottom of the number plate. I can have a number plate surround with this information on it but it can't be on the plate itself!!

To cut out the rotten piece and to weld in approx 15-20cms of pipe = 130 euro

That seems very dear to me, a Powerflow agent here in the North cut out a flange for me (on the Cladina) and replaced it with a welded part for £20!
