I've a spare standard gear shifter just wondering can it be altered to make the gear change shorter & tighter

It could but you will need a welder.
The rod that goes back and forth where it attaches to the shifter,
The part on the shifter will have to be cut and welded up higher.
Hope that makes sense...

Ok. Not sure were I seen it but I seen a post about different mr2 shifters and factory 1 has a piece welded on to attach cables and aftermarket had a hole drilled through halfway up the shaft but cant find the post to check it out again.
