I recently got some Poor Boy's Black Hole and Poor Boys Natty's Paste Wax. The Black hole is a glaze which temporarily fills in light scratches and swirl marks on dark colour cars (red, green, blue and black). The wax goes on over the glaze. It's excellent stuff. A good bit more expensive than standard Autoglym or Meguiars products but far superior (about £13 a bottle, but will last ages)
Basic steps are wash car with proper car shampoo- I use Autoglym shampoo and use a lambs wool mitt an two bucket method. Once a year I then clay bar the paint, then use a polish, then a glaze, then a wax. All other times in between I just wash, glaze and wax.
