Been a bit of noise about this but nothing to show? come on Toyota!!

and get a new MR2 rolling while you're there also

Just remake it with the SW20 chassis and update the engine/turbo/wheels a bit - cheaper on R&D!!

They also need a new gt4 to slap the evo/sti crowd. And a new supra to sort the gtr would be nice aswell. Not that I can buy any but you know what I mean.

AFAIK it was for 2011, but it may now be going thru the streamlining and market research phase so who knows if it will be seen on the roads here.

I was checking on autoguide and the FT86 has some more pictures up. I have to say the look is definately growing on me. The rear bumper is reminiscent of a Tom's bumper in the way it curves around the wheel at the back.

Autoguide.com
At a day dedicated to honoring the infamous Hachiroku in Japan, old generation AE86s stood by as Toyota‘s FT-86 II Concept finally made its Japanese debut at the Fuji 86 Style event. The Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya, was on hand to give his take on Toyota’s second FT-86 concept car as well as sharing his past experiences racing his AE86. But clearly the FT-86 II Concept was the star of the day, with Fuji Speedway Square Plaza completely filled with enthusiasts waiting to finally see the car in person many months after it first debuted at the Geneva Auto Show.

While Toyota has officially released few details, what they have said is that the car will be powered by a Subaru boxer engine, paired with a Toyota direct-injection system and either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A limited slip differential will be standard.

Set to debut at the Toyota Auto Show in December, it will be rebadged as the Scion FR-S for North America where it will bow at the New York Auto Show the following April.

Original article here: www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2011/08/toyo...debuts-in-japan.html

They have a good video of it also:

Very interesting article on the FT86 here: www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1717

The super-super-super fast cars are only for the super-rich. Even most super-rich don’t want to buy them. The people I talked to were looking for something like the 80s kind of a sports car, echoes of an AE86. They wanted a stripped-down, basic sports car with the price more like that of a piece of sports equipment, not the price of a house.

- Sounds great! lets see the same ethos applied to the next MR2!!

Apparently Toyota are pitching this to be sold at less than $30,000USD.

Would be great to have a new Toyota sports car for €25,000 definately a step in the right direction - don't screw it up ripoff ireland!!!!!!!

Here's a new teaser video to give everyone a windup in advance of the 2011 Frankfurt motor show:

Judging by the tires at 0:45 it's running 185's??
Interesting that at 0:50 it looks like they're running spacers!?

Also seems that they are hand painting the body - I presume that's only for that show car unless they're moving production to China

I can't wait to see these actually driving around on the roads, they better not be a disappointment. There is a lot of build up to this being as it is the first Sports car from Toyota in so long, they better bring out another MR2 as well!

40k!!!! WTF!!??

If that's true then I think that's the nail in the coffin for any kind of meaningful renaissance.

Did that figure come from a reliable source?

Yes I sent off a mail and they rang me today, he said they would hope to have it under 40k but he couldnt confirm until nearer the time as they do not have the specs and optional extras available to the Irish Market yet etc, So we have plenty of time to save for the deposit and hopefully it will be a bit cheaper but I wouldnt hold my breath

Why do you all want the new Celica anyway? Isn't this a front engine FWD car? If it is, it aint no 2.

Front boxer engined, rwd, possibly the rebirth of sports cars, however I am scared its not going to be as good as the years of hype have made it out to be.

But if Toyota's record with the LFA and the years that went into that, should be a good one boxing well above it weight in the grin factor.

No it's front engine, RWD. It's not the new Celica, it's the new AE86:

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

The reason I really want this car to work is that it would signify that Toyota had come back to their senses and could be successful once again with sports cars. But with pricing like "maybe 40k" they want to cop the hell on to themselves. I wonder is this rip off Ireland BS again? even though we're on our knees, people are flat out to even buy tyres or pay for road tax and probably the 'base model' enters at 40.5k. Imagine what price a new MR2 will start at? 60k (and probably 1.6l NA)? who's going to buy that?

In that article the chief designer is stating that they want to sell the car for under $30k USD or not at all. Should be only mid 20's in Ireland given the exchange rate!

The thing I put up a while ago estimated the UK price to be around £25k, so I would imagine in the south it'd be closer to €30K+

Technically yes, but with Ireland being Ireland, there will be fees after fees. VAT and depends on whether they manage to get rid of that poxy VRT. So USD multiplied by "the govt exchange rates", multiplied by 21% VAT multiplied by 40% or something along those lines. That could easily make 25K into 40K+.......bloody Ireland!

I am reckoning about the 35k mark as well, as much as that saddens me.

Maybe they will come out with a GT and GTS version.

Ode to cars being cars.

Wind up windows, for refreshment.
Chain on the floor for security.
Push button stereo, that's irrelevant above 60mph and 3500rpm.
Wipers that work at all speeds the car is capable of.
An air filter I can take of to start the car with WD40 when all else fails.
The smell of unburnt fuel spiling out its exhaust on a cold morning startup.
A spare wheel you can use above 40mph and for more than 70 miles.

But most of all, a car you need to look out off the rear 3/4 window to make sure your going to make it around the corner, in 2nd gear at 6500rpm and the look of panic and joy on your passengers face when you get it right, oh and air borne, god I miss the early 90's

Not sure, it certainely looks like it, but the rear quarter window has me thinking its a Mitsubishi of some description. Don't have time to look into it now.

Just checked and it is a Celica RA40 coupe. There was two revisions, one with round lights and the square dual light setup. Of the two I preferred the square lights, although to be brutally honest it's about my least favourite shaped Celica.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

There was a liftback version produced also, which in Aunfairly earned the unfortunate moninkor of the 'cockroach celica'. This was attributed to the fact that A in Australia we have a lot of cockroaches and they're pretty common, and B, the liftback design gave the car a very large and armoured looking back to it.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Having said all that, a lot of my friends in the Celica club had RA40's and they absolutely loved them and would not trade them for anything. This was a time that Toyota owners were very passionate about their cars as they were, honest, dependable, loveable, and great value for money.
